Placido Domingo...Zarzuela

Zarzuela is a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung scenes, the latter incorporating operatic and popular songs, as well as dance.

Here is Placido Domingo seen and heard singing the music he was literally born to sing. He comes naturally to the zarzuela. His parents were leading zarzuela singers both in Spain and Mexico, and Mr. Domingo sang in their productions in his early years.

The ''Antologia'' offers its viewers a tour through the 300-year-old history of zarzuela as well as a journey through Spain itself, its cities, and its provinces, each with distinctive melodies, dances and dress, as seen in 20 or so zarzuelas from which each number has been extracted. The etymology of the name is uncertain, but some propose it may derive from the name of a royal hunting lodge, the Palace of Zarzuela, near Madrid, where that type of entertainment was allegedly first presented to the court. The palace in turn was named after the brambles (zarzas) that grew there.

Zarzuela "is the music I heard in my crib," Domingo has said. "My mother sang it to me the night I was born." Although his career has taken him far from his Spanish music origins, zarzuela remains his first love.

That is made abundantly clear in this film, which was staged in Madison Square Garden if front of a packed arena audience.

Domingo does not perform alone. On stage with him are the 120 musicians and dancers of the Antologia de la Zarzuela, whose spectacular performances have become popular the world over.
