"Andy Warhol's Factory People"

“Andy Warhol’s FACTORY PEOPLE”, tells the story of the 60’s Silver Factory that Andy created in 1964 in an abandoned hat factory on East 47th Street in New York City, and considered by Warhol biographer Victor Bockris to be “The most intelligent art commune in the world”.

“The film adds spice to a well-trawled story. Mavericks from the Factory give their take on Warhol and his drug and sex-feuelled studio. The documentary is built loosely around a chronological theme: the making of the Factory, its life and work, its decline. Edited from over forty hours of newly recorded interviews with 20 of Warhol’s now-ageing celebrities and supporters, their testimony to camera is set beside glamorous archive photos. Brilliant editing and inter-cutting result in a fast moving collage, mixing clips from films by and about Warhol, and a vibrant sound track. Four years in the making, the film is meticulously crafted…”-Judith Bumpus, Media Review UK, The Art Newspaper (International Edition)

“What makes this documentary different is its avowed bottom-up approach: Warhol as a function of his followers is the idea. Most successfully,”Factory People” is a picture of bohemians in their age. Some have fared better than others, but a remarkable many have survived to remember. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, the film and its subjects say-but anyway, it was a time.”-Robert Lloyd, The Los Angeles Times

The Silver Factory lasted until 1968 when Andy gave up the lease and moved to the White Factory on Union Square. Shortly after moving in the Spring of ’68 Andy was shot by Valerie Solanas, and this event bookends the period of time covered in “Factory People”.
