Billy and the F Catalogue

Billy Name, Warhol’s Factory foreman, photographer and benevolent bearded Buddhist, left us in the late summer of 2016.  Billy had already long been on that astral plane that few of us reach in one lifetime, and we felt quite privileged to spend time in his splendid company.

Randy Kennedy of the New York Times encapsulated his importance to Warhol in the accompanying blurb: “Billy Name, born William Linich Jr. in 1940, not only captured Andy Warhol’s retinue of ‘Superstars’ but also documented the larger scene in his thousands of moody, high-contrast black and white photographs.”

Seven Minute Trailer:

Thanks to Billy and those thousands of photographs, we were able to showcase nearly his entire body of work, along with a three-hour in-depth interview with him for our television documentary series, ‘Andy Warhol’s Factory People’.

Footage for this 68 minute film is based on a fascinating "research" interview he gave us, which was not sutable for television broadcast, and never before seen.

The content of the interview has to do with an exhibition of Billy’s photos that took place in 1996, at the Parco Exposure Gallery in Tokyo, Japan.  Some of his work was already hanging on the walls of the Tokyo Museum of Art, but these were pictures that Billy had chosen, that resonated with him.  Here they are, in the ‘F Catalogue. Factory Fotos (sic) by Billy Name’.

A Note About Our Academic and Institutional Pricing

Educational DVD with PPR: $295

Anytime you want to screen a film on campus, Public Performance Rights (PPR) need to be obtained. Copyright law (USC 17§101) defines a public performance as occurring in a public space or if it is in any place if "a substantial number of persons outside of a normal circle of a family and its acquaintances" is gathered there. This would include classrooms, meeting rooms, auditoriums, dorm lounges, etc. However, copyright law (USC 17§110) also provides an exception for face-to-face teaching activities in a nonprofit educational institution.

Digital Site License with PPR: $395

A DSL grants educational institutions and/or non-profit organizations a limited license to host and stream a film online to students, faculty and staff on their password-protected server. This license is granted for three years. The key advantage of purchasing a DSL is that once uploaded, an unlimited number of viewers can access the film from multiple locations simultaneously.
