Alvaro Mutis...The Lookout

Alvaro Mutis…The Lookout  A Literary Biography for Academic Library Distribution

Álvaro Mutis (1923-2013) the Colombian poet and novelist (Latin-American Modernist) and close friend of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, created one of Latin American Literature’s more memorable characters, the rambling and ruminative Maqroll, an inadvertent explorer of jungles and his own jaded soul for whom life seemed a long and futile boat ride, mostly upriver, and often running aground.

Here is a brief clip from the film....

Maqroll the Gaviero (the Lookout) is one of the most alluring and memorable characters in the fiction of the last twenty-five years. His extravagant and hopeless undertakings, his brushes with the law and scrapes with death, and his enduring friendships and unlooked-for love affairs make him a Don Quixote for our day, driven from one place to another by a restless and irregular quest for the absolute. Álvaro Mutis's seven dazzling chronicles of the adventures and misadventures of Maqroll have won him numerous honors and a passionately devoted readership throughout the world.

In this entertaining one hour film, we are introduced to Mutis in his own words, his poems and novels, his characters, and reflections on his life from novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

“…North Americans may be reminded of Melville-more a matter, perhaps, of affinity than of influence.” –John Updike.

The Chilean poet Gonzalo Rojas threatened to sue Mr. Mutis if he ever killed off his beloved character. Mr. Mutis spoke of Maqroll as if he were a living person. “He often accompanies me, but we are no longer side by side but face to face,” he said in an interview with the writer Francisco Goldman. “So Maqroll doesn’t surprise me too much, but he does torment me and keep me company. He is more and more himself, and less my creation, because of course, as I write novels, I load him up with experiences and actions and places that I don’t know but that he of course does.”

A Note About Our Academic and Institutional Pricing

Educational DVD with PPR: $295

Anytime you want to screen a film on campus, Public Performance Rights (PPR) need to be obtained. Copyright law (USC 17§101) defines a public performance as occurring in a public space or if it is in any place if "a substantial number of persons outside of a normal circle of a family and its acquaintances" is gathered there. This would include classrooms, meeting rooms, auditoriums, dorm lounges, etc. However, copyright law (USC 17§110) also provides an exception for face-to-face teaching activities in a nonprofit educational institution.

Digital Site License with PPR: $395

A DSL grants educational institutions and/or non-profit organizations a limited license to host and stream a film online to students, faculty and staff on their password-protected server. This license is granted for three years. The key advantage of purchasing a DSL is that once uploaded, an unlimited number of viewers can access the film from multiple locations simultaneously.

DVD + DSL bundle PPR: $450

K-12, Non-profit, Public Library with PPR: $125
