The Story of Oil...The Rise of OPEC
Two oil men, one from Venezuela and one from Saudi Arabia, were tired of seeing their producing countries winding up on the short end of the stick so they got together and created The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. Then, more clever men came along and took over, men like Sheikh Zaki Yamani.
Other countries joined in, some with very radical nationalist leaders who refused to play ball with the world’s major oil companies. They wanted a bigger piece of the pie. They were men like Muammar Gaddafi of Libya.

Then with the Yom Kippur War we had the First Oil Crisis in 1974, a tough time to find a gas station with gas. The majors had to adapt, and adapt they did, playing a part in the early development of all sorts of alternative energy systems including solar, wind and nuclear…the clear and most dangerous, winner.
Naturally, it was the Middle East again that continued to haunt us with Ruhollah Khomeini, Supreme Leader of Iran. Along came the Second Oil Crisis in 1979…remember the interest rates? Then counter crisis 1982 and the oil boys start to fear the end time for their oil wealth.
Then it was Saddam and the First Gulf War, 1990. Then there is a deluge of petrodollars, mostly wasted by the Arab Nations.
At the close of the century, it was clear the Middle East was, and always would create problems for the oil consuming nations of the world. But wait, here comes the Second Gulf War and explosive growth in China and India.
So maybe we are running out of oil, and they want to live just like us?
