"Our rent for a one bedroom apartment between 1st and A was 70 dollars a month, and in it lived me, Jackie Curtis, Holly Woodlawn, occasionally Candy Darling, Rita Red, Rio Grande, Jane County, Johnny Paton, all in a one bedroom apartment. It’s not like we interfered with each other’s sleeping arrangements, because no one slept. Everyone was just on speed all the time.
"Jackie would get up and you’d see her putting the speed in the coffee and she’d say, “I don’t really take drugs, I just put a little something in my coffee in the morning, just to get me going. And …her version of morning, it could be the afternoon….
"Zip wax is impossible to remove once it’s hardened. And that’s what Holly Woodlawn would use on her facial beard. And she had quite a big and strong facial beard. She was half Spanish and half Jewish, and so she wasn’t some little wisp. And so she’d glob that wax on and then of course she’d be stoned, so she’d go down or trip over, or sit, suddenly she’d be listening to a record and of course you know the wax had completely hardened and she was having to like chip it off with the end of a spoon. And it was just everywhere, mostly on the stove because you had to heat it up to make it soft.
"The kitchen would be covered, zip wax on the stove, the bathtub was in the kitchen, and nothing ever got washed, nothing got cleaned. Fortunately we never did anything remotely like cooking, then it would have been even worse!"
