Gerard Malanga, Poet and Warhol Assistant in studio interview, New York City
Ben had a hard time lighting Gerard for the shoot as the stronger light fell on the left side of his face and Gerard did not like that side of himself, he would keep constantly turning into shadow, but we got a lot of good stuff, and did another interview anyway. Total interview time on Gerard: Four hours. More about the typical Factory day…
“I think the focus would be varied….if I were setting up a shot to do a scene at the Factory, I’d basically set up a dolly track (laugh) and do a Jean Luc Goddard, dolly around the Factory and catch all these different activities…simultaneously. You’d catch Andy and me silk screening, you’d catch BILLY playing opera records and talking to ONDINE and some friends seated on the couch chatting away, and maybe somebody else is in the corner drawing, I mean a lot of different things were happening.”
