Cuba: History Will Tell...The Huber Matos Benitez Story

As a revolutionary, Huber Matos Benitez (1918-2014) assisted his friend Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and other members of the 26th July Movement in overthrowing the Batista dictatorship as a Comandante of the Cuban Revolution.

Matos Benitez had opposed General Batista and his military dictatorship since the army’s coup in 1952, which he regarded as unconstitutional. Then as Castro came to power, Matos began to oppose the movement’s shift towards Marxist principles and its closening ties with the Communist Party of Cuba.
Starting to sense the Marxist direction in September 1959
According to Matos Benitez, in 1959 Castro told him, “Your resignation is not acceptable at this point. We still have much work to do.’ He said. ‘I admit that Raul and Che are flirting with Marxism…but we have the situation under control…Forget about resigning…But if in a while you believe the situation is not changing, you have the right to resign.”
Castro then convicted him of treason and sedition for his public denunciations of the direction the revolution was taking, and he wound up spending 20 years of his life in prison. (1959-1979). He passed away at the age of 95. To his final days he was heard speaking out against the Cuban government.

‘History Will Tell’ is his version of the facts related to the revolution, what happened to him, and why Castro must take full responsibility for the outcome of the Cuban nation.
Matos Benitez's memory was still strong when his interviews were produced, and coupled with never before seen footage from the revolution, the film reflects on the little known fact that countless thousands of 26th July revolutionaries involved in the struggle were imprisoned for their ignored and prosecuted professions of freedom and democracy.
He passed away Thursday, February 27, 2014 at the age of 95. See the Miami Herald notice here.
