Black And Blue On Broadway...A Film By Robert Altman

BLACK AND BLUE opened at Broadway’s Minskoff Theater on January 26, 1989, and ran for 861 performances. The show won 12 Tony nominations and won Tony’s for Best Choreography, Best Costumes and Best Actress in a Musical.
During its run on Broadway BLACK AND BLUE was the Broadway show with the most foreign visitors. That was because the audiences didn’t have to speak English to enjoy the shows music, song and dance.
In 1991, famed movie director Robert Altman was engaged to direct a filmed version of BLACK AND BLUE for a TV special.

Variety, the American leading show business newspaper wrote the following: ‘BLACK AND BLUE never looked as good as It does in Robert Altman’s keenly observed, briskly paced small screen version of the rhythm and Blues review. Black and Blue looks great and sounds better.’

A Musical Revue conceived by Héctor Orezzoli and Claudio Segovia, Black and Blue is a celebration of a great and marvelous cultural legacy, the classic African-American tradition of song, dance and music. It is set in the period between the two World Wars, the period in Paris where black American artists were given an unusually warm reception. The show reflects a Parisian affection for the exotic. It also has plenty of old-fashioned Hollywood razzle-dazzle. It is a homage to all the spirits of all the legends that created the wonderful period that is Black and Blue.

Anytime you want to screen a film on campus, Public Performance Rights (PPR) needs to be obtained. Copyright law (USC 17§101) defines a public performance as occurring in a public space or if it is in any place if "a substantial number of persons outside of a normal circle of a family and its acquaintances" is gathered there.
