Musik From the Weimar and Beyond and I'm a Stranger Here Myself

“Musik From the Weimar and Beyond” and “I’m A Stranger Here Myself” are two films in a double DVD or Streaming File collection that tell the story of Germany’s Weimar Republic, explaining how Adolf Hitler rose to power, how German Art and Performing Arts talent escaped German Antisemitism and LGBTQ persecution, and got to Broadway and Hollywood before America entered WWII (30 minutes). The second DVD presents Nadler's complete off-Broadway Show (88 minutes).

Stream BOTH films on KANOPY!  Order Personal or Educational DVDs or File Downloads below...

FILM 1  MUSIK FROM THE WEIMAR AND BEYOND...

Producer, Writer, Performing Artist, Mark Nadler describes the Weimar Era as “14 years of unprecedented artistic and sexual freedom, a sort of anything goes Eden before Hitler and the Nazis took over”. Using songs by German and French songwriters who composed during the years of the Weimar Republic, Nadler examines the lives of these composers as well as those of ordinary German citizens caught up in one of the most intriguing and emotionally charged periods of the Twentieth Century.

Here is a trailer of the 30 minute film with Mark Nadler discussing the origins of the Weimar Republic and the rise of Adolf Hitler's NAZI Party.

FILM 2: I'M A STRANGER HERE MYSELF...

Both films are tempered by an undercurrent of isolation that jibes well with the subject. Discussion of the outsider status of many prominent artists of pre-Nazi Germany—many of them gay, Jewish or both—is juxtaposed with details from Nadler’s Jewish family and his own history as an entertainer. The show itself places Nadler in front of a projected montage of imagery that includes historical photos from the 1920s and 30s as well as gently evocative film clips from the Iowa-born performer's early years in New York. "I don't know who I belong to," he sings, in a recurring motif. "I believe I belong to myself, all alone." Reflections on pre WWII Germany and the roots of hatred and anti-semitism today come to life.

Anytime you want to screen a film on campus, Public Performance Rights (PPR) need to be obtained. Copyright law (USC 17§101) defines a public performance as occurring in a public space or if it is in any place if "a substantial number of persons outside of a normal circle of a family and its acquaintances" is gathered there. This would include classrooms, meeting rooms, auditoriums, dorm lounges, etc. However, copyright law (USC 17§110) also provides an exception for face-to-face teaching activities in a nonprofit educational institution.

Digital Site License with PPR: $200

A DSL grants educational institutions and/or non-profit organizations a limited license to host and stream a film online to students, faculty and staff on their password-protected server.
