Cuba Son

After a lifetime of Latin music performance throughout the world, Azuquita ( born Camilo Luis Argumédez, 1945 in Panama) whose Cuban parents were both singers of Son Cubano, traveled back to Cuba in 2001 to visit and perform with his friends, Los Jubilados the ancient “Son” stars of Santiago.

The film shares the everyday life of these tireless retired men and follows them as they record their latest record, play for popular local dances, visit with their families, and improvise with other singers in the streets of Santiago.

Son Cubano is a genre of music and dance that originated in the highlands of eastern Cuba during the late 19th century. It is a syncretic genre that amalgamates elements of Spanish and African origin. Among its fundamental Hispanic components are the vocal style, lyrical meter and the primacy of the tres, derived from the Spanish guitar. On the other hand, its characteristic clave rhythm, call and response structure, and percussion section (bongomaracas, etc.) are all rooted in traditions of Bantu origin.

Thanks to the Buena Vista Social Club album and film, there has been a revival of the traditional Son and a rediscovery of older Son performers who had often fallen by the wayside. Our thanks to Azuquita, who became a French citizen in 1995, for bringing us to Los Jubliados and their traditional Santiago Son.

Anytime you want to screen a film on campus, Public Performance Rights (PPR) need to be obtained. Copyright law (USC 17§101) defines a public performance as occurring in a public space or if it is in any place if "a substantial number of persons outside of a normal circle of a family and its acquaintances" is gathered there. This would include classrooms, meeting rooms, auditoriums, dorm lounges, etc. However, copyright law (USC 17§110) also provides an exception for face-to-face teaching activities in a nonprofit educational institution.

Digital Site License with PPR: $395

A DSL grants educational institutions and/or non-profit organizations a limited license to host and stream a film online to students, faculty and staff on their password-protected server.
